A listing of the nodes on the ARPANET with a description of the node.
Summary[edit]
DescriptionARPANET circa 1980.png |
English: TIPs on the ARPANET allowed users to connect a stand alone terminal by dialing a phone number. A common terminal was made by Hazeltine. Once connected, the TIP had commands to control which computer to connect the user to. This printout steps through the help pages provided after dialing up a TIP. One of the help pages is a listing of the ARPANET nodes. The printout was made using a Texas Instruments thermal paper terminal. The quality of the thermal printout has not deteriorated significantly since the original printing. The listing was stitched together from several scans of the 1980 printout that were made around 2010. The Address column provides what is equivalent to the IP Address of the Internet. To connect to a host the tip command "@o address" would attempt to connect to the destination computer. For example, to connect to the AI computer at MIT where LISP was available, the user would type "@o 134". The Hostname column is the unique name of the host, similar to the DNS name of the Internet. The ARPANET had "tourists", people who connected to the TIP via phone landline, but were not authorized to use the ARPANET. Tourists were tolerated outside of normal working hours. MIT provided user accounts for tourists interested in experimenting with LISP or MACSYMA. Many hosts had "guest" accounts that provided technology demonstrations including games. Some early games were Zork on the MIT host and Haunt on the RAND host. |
